FIRE gAT GREYMOUTH.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Greymouth, September 1. About 4 this morning a fire broke out at Maokay-Btreet, in the Masonic Hall, in which is the Greymouth Public Library and Reading Room and several offices. The tire spread rapidly through the building, and, though the firemen were quickly on the scene, it was impossible to save the building, A very large proportion of the books of the library were saved, but all the furniture and fittings of the institution were destroyed. All the Masonic regalia and property of the order were burnt. By dint of great exertions the fire was confined to the building. Felix Campbell’s wholesale store had a narrow escape. A great quantity of his stock was removed. For a time the flying sparks made it very dangerous for all the buildings round about. Fortunately there was no wind. The house was insured for ±SOO in the Equitable and £SOO in the South British offices ; the reading room, books, and furniture for £2OO in the Standard ; the Masonic regalia of lodges and chapter, £l7O in the New Zealand office ; and £l3O on the furniture, and £4O on the harmonium.
