Co s ss Tekapo left Sydney at 10.30 pm on the 26th November, and was abreast of Stephen’s Island at 8.30 am on the2nd inst., made the Brothers at 12.30 pm, and berthed alongside the Queen’s Wharf at 4 o’clock next afternoon. She experienced fine weather with light variable winds throughout the passage. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Mararoa left Melbourne at--3 pm on the 24th ult., and arrived at Hobartat Bam on the 26th. She sailed at spm the same day,, arriving at the Bluff at 1.30 pm on. the 29th, and Port Chalmers at 4.30 am next day. She left Lyttelton at 11.10 pm yesterday week, and arrived here at noon next day. She experienced strong head winds and heavy sea between Melbourne and Hobart, which delayed her somewhat. She sailed for Sydney, via East Coast and Auckland, last Friday evening. The s.s. Go-Ahead left Castlepoint at 4.30 pm on the 4th, and arrived here at 6.30 am on Sunday. She left Auckland at 10.30 pm on the 2nd, called at Gisbourne and Napier, and arrived here at 10.15 am on Sunday, experienced light variable winds and fine weather to Napier, and strong southerly winds to arrival. The ss Kawatiri arrived from Westport at 1.30 on Monday morning, with the steamer Ladybird in tow. The Ladybird Is to be dismantled and turned into a coal hulk.. The barque Advancement, 459 tons, Captain Tallis, from Bockhampton, is expected, here within the next fortnight. She loads here with wool for London,

The U.S.S. Co’s ss Penguin left Dunedin at 3.30 pm on the 6th, called at Port Chalmers and Lyttelton. She left_ the latter port at 9 pm on the 7th, and arrived here at 3.15 pm next day. She experienced strong N W gale and heavy head sea from the Kaikouras to arrival. i ’

The U.S.S. Co’s ss Hawea left Nelson at 5.20 pm on the 7th, called at Picton, and arrived here at 3.30 pm on Wednesday. She sailed for South in the evening.

The ship Wave Queen, for London, has now finished loading, and was to leave for London weather permitting, yesterday. She is the first wool ship of the season.

ABBIVAL OF THE SHIP TUBAKINA, FBOM ENGLAND.

The ship Turakina, from London, was towed into harbor at about 10 p.m. on the Ist inst. by the Government steamer Hinemoa, on her way into port. Captain Power reports that the Turakina left London on the 23rd of August, and Gravesend a day later. She crossed the Line on the Ist of October, and was off the Cape on the 24th of the same month. On the 17th of November the captain reports a man lost overboard. The vessel was going at the rate of 9J knots, the wind was W by N, and a heavy sea was running at the time. The man’s name was John Sullivan, anable seaman, and he was out stowing the jib at; the time. The second' mate, who was on deck, at once brought the ship to the wind, and threw a lifebuoy overboard, but to no purpose. The unfortunate man never came to the surface again, and it is supposed that the ship must have gone over him. The men who were aloft with him at the time state that Sullivan was in a fit when he fell. He was 27 years of age. The Turakina arrived off Cape Farewell on the 29fch ult. She had moderate weather throughout the passage.

THE B.M.S. AOBANGDAT POBT

CHALMERS.

(united press association.) Port Chalmers, December 2. The B.M.S. Aorangi arrived at the Heads at 6.20 am to-day, and steamed direct into port, her draught being 22ft aft. She still maintains her reputation, having made the passage steaming from Plymouth in 39 days 4 hours 50 minutes. She brings 2000 tons or cargo for all ports, together with 305 passengers and 285 bags of mails. She left Plymouth at 2 pm on the 23rd October, and reached Madeira on 27th ; left same day, and arrived at Capetown at noon on 12th November; sailed same evening, sighted the Snares at 2.30 ptn yesterday, and arrived as above. EXAMINATION OF OFFICERS IN

COLORS.

It is notified in the Gazette that candidate for a certificate of competency as"'

master or mate is now required to pass an .examination as to his ability to distinguish -colors. These examinations are open to all persons serving or about to serve in the mercantile marine ; and, as failure to pass the •color-test debars a person from obtaining a master’s or mate's certificate, it is obviously to the advantage of persons to go up for the exlamination before going to sea. be fee charge tor examination in colors only is 2s 6d.

; A DTJNEDIN-BUILT DREDGE. (united press association.) Dunedin, December 7. The hull of the New River Harbor Board’s -dredge was launched to-day from the yards of Messrs Kincaid, McQueen and Co, the builders, ■and named the Alpha The dredger is 50ft long, 15ft beam, and 6ft 6in m depth. It is , capable of raising.. 75 tons of spoil per hour, from a depth of 18ft below the surface of the water. The frames and plates are of steel, and •double rivetted. The motive power will be supplied by a pair of inverted high pressure '--engines, capable of being worked up to 70 h.p. The vessel will be fitted with a screw propeller and all the necessary shafting for propelling from one place to another. lhe -engines will be. easily disconnected from the -dredging machinery in order to be used for the propeller. The mooring chains will be worked lay an improved double cylinder engine, which will also raise and lower the ladder, all being under the control of one man. Steam will be supplied by a boiler ■having a working pressure of 801 b. With the -exception of making glasses, all the work has been done in Dunedin, the steel being imported as it left the rolling mill.

THE R.M.S. AORANGI, FROM LONDON.

The R.M.S. Aorangi, from London, via Plymouth. Madeira, Capetown, Port Chalmers, cand Lyttelton, arrived here at 2,30 pm Wednesday. She left Lyttelton at midnight on the 7th, and experienced strong NW gale and heavy head sea from the Kaikouras to arrival. A full report and list of passengers appears ■elsewhere.
