Three wooden houseß in Grosvenor-Btreet, Kensington, were burned down last night. The fire broke out in the store of L. McWhinny, containing seven rooms, and, fanned by the fresh breeze, spread rapidly, the shop of R. Itae, butcher, and the dwelling of -J. Sutton being also destroyed. Rae’s premises were insured in the Standard for £IOO ; Sutton was uninsured. Mrs Burns, whose furniture was greatly damaged" by removal, was insured in the Standard for £2OO.
Judge Williamß, in his charge to the Grand Jury at the opening of the Supreme Court today, referred only to the cases in the calendar which were of an ordinary character. Phillip Waldeman, convicted last session of arson at Queenstown, whose case was reserved for the Appeal Court, was sentenced to seven years. Thomas Hodge pleaded guilty to larceny, and was sentenced to two years. c j ■ Inveboabgill, July 19. A colored man, named Harry Davis, cook to a Burvey party near Orepuki, has been found dead in the bush. It is supposed that be died from heart disease. The police hare received information that William Chinn, who went out shooting at Waitu on Sunday with three other men, bas been found dead, having evidently been killed by a discharge from his gun, after straying from his mates. An inquest will be held. ";r ; .. !
Auckland, July 19. Purukutu, Sullivan’s murderer, is much alarmed at Winiata’s capture. Winlata strenuously protests his innocence, stating that the blood seen on his clothes was that of a flat fish he had speared the night preceding the murder.
Blenheim, July 19. At the inquest yesterday on the body of Mr Campbell, who shot himself through the head on Saturday last, a verdict was returned " that deceased came by his death by shooting himself With a : Snider carbine whilst laboring under a fit of temporary insanity.” ; u Auckland, July 19. j
At a meeting of the Directors of the Unioh Oil, Soap, and Candle Company, in to 1000 shares taken np by promoters, 21,560 •hares were allotted to applicants. Orders will go home by the next mail for the latest machinery from America and England. Mr Ponsonby Peacock, Assistant Inspector of Schools, accidentally fell over the North Shore wharf at night, and narrowly , escaped drowning. He clnng to a pile for half an hour, and his cries for help were for a long time unheard. Ultimately he got on the cross beams, and thence to'the wharf. A Native, petition is being largely signed for release of Mikiere, convicted for the Oxford murder, there being a strong belief in his innocence.

The Heatbcote eohool inquiry ended to-d»y. Counsel on both sides addressed the Commission. Wilkes, the schoolmaster, was dismissed, and leaves for Wanganui to-morrow, where he has been appointed to another school.
