A trial of strength took place on Wednesday night, or rather next morning, between the Government and the Opposition on the proposed second, reading of Sir George Grey’s Constitution Amendment Bill. The plan of the Opposition was to postpone the consideration of the Bill to avoid the risk of dividing the party, whose members held different views regarding it. The Government resisted the motion for delay, which led to a hurried mustering of forces on both sides. The result of the vote, as will be seen from our reporting columns, placed the Government in a majority of four. A motion that the Bill be read six months hence was thereafter carried on the voices.
