In the Supreme Court yesterday, Hennelley was found guilty of two charges of forgery, and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. Joseph Hayes, for stealing from a dwelling, received eighteen months. Emanuel llodriquez, found guilty of au unnatural offence, will be sentenced to-day. No bills were returned in the case of David Johnston, for horse stealing,' and James Jacob Bower, for forgery. True bills were found against Eliza Davidson, for ■bigamy ; Henry Goldsmith, for stealing from a dwelling ; Samuel BowdeD, James Troy, and Samuel Duffy, for forgery. The grand jury have made the following presentment That there are numerous bills of indictment brought before them which should be summarily dealt with b) Justices of the Peace of this judicial district ; that in consequence of these ne-dless commitments to the Supreme Court, the country is put to considerable unnecessary expense, and that in some instances the accused escapes the punishment of the lesser crime whilst being charged with the greater one.’’

Thomas Gorman was coirmitted for trial for perjury at the Police Courc yesterday. Archdeacon Lush died y esterday, aged 65. At Balclutha to-day the man Hewitt, who stuck up the constable, who was removing his cattle, was fined £5, or one month, for pointing a loaded gun at the constable. Seven suburban municipalities were represented at the conference of Mayors last night, and it yyas agreed to follow the lead of Caversham in protesting against Dunedin obtaining

the sole right of impounding water from the Taieri River. The City Council last night agreed to allow £4O a year to Mr Simpson, Clerk of Police Court, for his services as clerk to the City Licensing Committees. One Councillor protested against the expenditure as illegal. Cuthbert McKellai, formerly in charge of the National Bank at Mosgiel, was to-day charged with embezzlement. The case for the prosecution was that on April 13 the accused received from Daniel Fisher, a publican at Mosgiel, the sum of £29 2s, of which £4 2s was in cheques, and the balance in notes and gold. This balance the accused was charged with embezzling. The case was adjourned till Friday for further evidence. Christchurch, July 12. A man was arrested at Lyttelton to-day, wanted, for stealing money at Timaru. A Committee has been appointed to make arrangements for receiving Sir Julius Vogel in a suitable manner. The District Court wa3 occupied to-day with an amusing case of assault supposed to have taken place at a German picnic. About the only thing clearly shown was that everybody had drunk more beer than was good for them, and the Court held that 40s with costs would meet the damages inflicted. The claim was the modest sum of £IOO.

Thers were only eleven more votes polled this time than at the last Stanmore election, but Pilliet got a considerable increase iu the number recorded for him.

As the Exhibition is drawing to a close auction sales of its contents are announced in rapid t-uccession. They have been going on all this week, and will continue all next. Young and Victor Perely were found guilty of indecent assault; sentence deferred. The Chatham Islands case will be taken to-morrow.

Alexander Beattie was charged, on remand, at the Magistrate’s Court to-day with the murder of Sarah Beattie (or Adams). He was further remanded until Tuesday next Nelson, July 12.
