NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

(united PRESS association.) Nel-on, March 1, noon. The members of the Rifle Association, together with all the local companies, mustered for church parade vesterday, and attended the Cathedral. This morning all the members arrived iu camp about 10 o’clock, and the morning has been occupied by the men in getting into quarters. At 2 o’clock there will be a parade, and at 3.30 the first match will be commenced. The arrangements for firing are completed, the ranges being aim >st the same as last year ; but it is probable that longer time will be taken in marking the shots, on account of the alteration of the butts with the view of increasing the protection of the Colonel Packe is in command, and Major Lean is Camp Adjutant, whilst Captain Webb is acting as Secretary, Mr. Stevens being unable to attend.

S p.m.

There was a parade at Br'ghtwater between 2 and 3 p.m., when 161 members were present. At half-past 2 o’clock Colonel Packe came on the ground, and shortly afterwards the meeting was opened by Mrs. Pitt, wife of Major Pitt, firing the first shot, which was scored as a bull’s eye. The lady having been cheered, and the men divided into 12 squads, the actual business commenced. Prior to this, however, the markers had expressed some dissatisfaction, alleging that the butts did not sufficiently protect them. Upon this some alterations were made, but shortly after the firing commenced one of the markers received a nasty cut on the arm by a splinter off the target. Shortly after the firing commenced a fire occurred in the camp. It appears the occupants of a tent, comprising Wellington and Napier men under the command of Lieutenant Bennett, had been smoking their cigars, and had used a candle which was left burning; this ultimately communicated with the bedding, which, in addition to some trunks containing private effects and dress uniforms, was destroyed. The tent, however, was saved, as also some hundred rounds of ammunition.
