DUNEDIN RAGES.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, February 26,

The weather is dull, owing to a heavy fog hanging over the hills, but there is little likelihood of rain. The Governor and the Hon. Lady Robinson arrived on the course early. Natator was scratched for the Cup early this morning. Two totalisators are at work and are fairly patronised. When the first event started, at 1 o’clock punctually, 2000 persons were on the course. Free Handicap, of 60 sovs. One mile. Butler's Luna, 5 yrs., 7st. 71bs. 1 Hon. W. Robinson’s br f On Dit, 3 yrs., 6st. lib 2 Mason and Vallance’s ch f Tera, 3 yrs., 6st. 31bs. 3 Won by a nose, after a capital race. Time, Imin 38sec. The Champagne Stakes, for two-year olds, a sweepstakes of 10 sovs. each with 100 sovs. added. Colt, Bst 101 b ; fillies, Bst 71b ; no allowance for geldings. The second horse to receive 20 sovs. from the stakes. Six furlongs. 39 subscribers. Hon. R. Campbell’s br c Sir Modred, by Traducer-Idalia ... ... ... ... 1 C. Webb’s Revoke colt ... ... ... 2 J. Chaafe’s Waimere colt ... ... ... 3 Time, lmin. 21sec. The weather last night did not look particularly promising. Early in the morning there was a faint drizzle, but the day was a good one for the sport, and the racing on the whole was remarkably good, Mata’s time for the Cup being the fastest on record. There were about 5000 persons present. In the Free Handicap, the betting was 3 to 1 agst Marie Antoinette and Ou Dit, 3 to 1 Luna, sto 1 any other. In the totalisator the winner’s price was sto 1. The lot were sent off very well together, Marie Antoinette being first to take the lead, next in order came Voltigeur, Luna, On Dit, Tera, Glendyne. After a good race Luna won by a head, On Dit second, Tera third. v- Eor the Champagne Stakes, the betting was 6 to 4 agst Waimea (colt), 2 to 1 Sir Modred, and 3to 1 the rest. The Revoke, colt, got

a little best of the start, Sir Modred, Benvolio, the Flat Iron, filly, and the Waimea, colt, in the order named. Sir Modred soon improved in position, and coming up the straight won with a lot in hand by a length. The Revoke, colt, beat the Waimea, colt, for second place by about a bead. The Flat Iron, filly, was fourth, and Benvolio last. The Totalisator received £IOB. The victory of the Otago colts was very well received. The Dunedin Cup, a handicap, 500 sovs. added. The second horse to receive 50 sovs, and the third 20 sovs from the stakes. Two miles and a distance. The winner of any handicap race of the value of £2OO, after declaration of weights, to carry 71bs extra ; of two or more such races, lOlbs extra ; of any such handicap race of the value of £IOO, to carry 51bs extra ; of two or more such races, 81bs extra ; of one or more such races of the value of lOOsovs, together with one of the value of 200sovs, 9lbs extra. Betting : Even money against Titania, 3 to l Mata, 4 to 1 Grip, 6 to 1 Hornby and Betrayer, 100 to 5 Camballo, Longlands and Atlantic. After one break away a capital start was effected, the whole line getting off simultaneously. Approaching the stand,

Libeller was found to be in the van, with Atlantic and Grip at his girths ; Foul Play and Camballo heading the ruck, while the r armost of the whole was Longlands. Going round to the right, the Auckland colt was still in the front, with Atlantic his immediate attendant and Grip and Mata a length behind and slightly in front of Camballo, Foul Play, Titania, Hornby, and Betrayer, with Longlands tailing off. At the three-quarters of a mile, Wattie brought Titania up through her horses, and passing the stand the second time the favorite was fully in front, a little before Libeller and Camballo, next to whom lay Atlantic, Mr. Robinson’s pair and Hornby and Mata in a cluster. Roundirig the turn to the right, Titania began to draw further away, and as Libeller and Camballo began to drop back at this juncture, Atlantic and Mata took second and third places. At the back of the course, half a mile from home, the field momentarily closed together again, with the exception of Longlands, but before reaching the distance post the final effort had found out the weak spots of the majority, and the final struggle was left to Titania, Mata, Betrayer, Foul Play and Grip. Mr. Ray’s mare, held a clear lead as they turned into the straight, but Mata gradually drew up on the outside and Derritt at the same moment called on Foul Play. The Wellington Cup winner joined issue, and a most exciting run home ensued. Wattie rode the favorite desperately, and she responded gamely, but Mata had the most in him, and once inside the rails he got his head in front, and gaining inch by inch won a grand race by a head. Foul Play, whose final rush was a little late, and on whom the weight told too much, could not get quite up, but he was beaten by only a length for third place. Grip was fourth ; Betrayer, fifth ; Camballo, sixth ; Libeller, seventh ; Hornby, eighth ; Atlantic, ninth ; Longlands last of all. Time, 3min. 56|3cc., the fastest on record for this race. Comment on the result of this is scarcely necessary, but it proves that the Press and general public were correct in their estimates of the handicap when it made its final appearance, Mata and Titania having been spotted at once and held the firmest of favorites ever since. There were £321 in the totalisator, and the odds against the winner stood at sto 1. The next fastest time for the Cup was Templeton’s, 3min. 59sec., in 1878. Ladies’ Purse, of 50 sovs. One mile and a distance ; welter weights for age. Gentlemen riders. Mr. H. Prince’s br c Hilarious, by Golds-

Mason and Vallance’s b c Volunteer, 3 yrs, lOst 31b (Mr. Bradley) ... 2 Mr. Chancellor’s Lone Hand, BillingsgateMarie Antoinette scratched. Betting : Any odds on Hilarious. This was simply a canter round for Hilarious, Mr. McLaren having all his work to do to prevent his steed winning by a quarter of a mile. No time was taken. Jones’ b g Glendyn (£10), 5 yrs, 7st 2 S. Chaffe’s ch g Glengarry (£10), aged, 5 yrs ... ... ... ••• ••• 3 Adamant won after a good race. The following are the acceptances for the Leger : —Mason and Vallance’s Volunteer, Bsfc 101 b ; Fraser’s Betrayer, Bst 101 b ; Robinson's Grip, 8-t 101 b; Ray’s Hornby, Bst 101 b; Lunn’s Marie Antionette, Bst 81b. The only acceptor for the D.J.C. Handicap, after weights were declared last night, was Foul Play, Bst 101 b. Dunedin, February 27.

The weather was beautiful to day, and there was a large attendance, almost equal to that of the first day. Some remarkably good racing took place, the only drawback being the walk over for the D.J.C. Handicap. In order to fill up the programme a Stewards’ Handicap was added. The Govesnor and party were present. There is no truth in the rumor that the Governor is in partnership with the Hon. W. Robinson in horseracing matters. Handicap Hurdle Race, of 65 sovs. The second horse to receive 10 sovs. from the stakes. Two miles and a distance, over 10 flights of hurdles. Mr. D. McMaster’s ch g Scamp, aged, 9st 7ib (Allan) ... _ ••• 1 Mr. G. Lunn’s g m Alice Grey, aged, Sst 101 b (Clifford) 2 Mr. J. Cotton’s b g Thilo, 6 yrs, 9st (owner) ... ••• ••• ••• . ••• ® Lone Hand, Black Prince, Robin Hood, Architect, and Antoinette, also ran. Betting : 5 to 2 on the field, Black Prince, Lone Hand, and Scamp, being mostly taken. At the fall of the flag Scamp and Architect went to the front, and cleared the first hurdle together, closely followed by Robin Hood, Alice Grey, and Lone Hand, while Black Prince, Antoinette, and Thilo, brought up the rear. At the next fence Robin Hood fell, and was out of the race thenceforth, whilst Lone Hand baulked once at the succeeding hurdle. Scamp and Architect meanwhile raced away together, followed at a couple of lengths distance by Black Prince, Thilo, and Alice Grey, in the order named. Passing the stand the second time the little horße was still in the front, with Architect close upon him, Thilo next, slightly ahead of Black Prince, who in turn held a couple ot lengths advantage of Alice Grey and Antoinette, Lone Hand bringing up the rear, and fencing in a most awkward manner. Going round to the back of the

course Architect began to fall back, and his place was taken by Thilo, while at the same time Clifford began to bring Alice Grey nearer to the front. Turning into the straight Scamp had a slight lead of Thilo, while Black Prince and Alice Grey were coming up fast, and a slashing ’race home ensued. All were hard ridden, but Scamp held bis own well, and though Alice Grey came with a tremendous rush and passed Thilo at the stand the mare could never quite get up to Mr M'Masters horse, who won by a length, Thilo a good third Black Prince fourth, Architect fifth, Antoinette sixth, and Lone Hand seventh \ll jumped splendidly, except Robin Hood and Lone Hand. Time, 4min. 34sec The Dunedin St. Legee, a sweepstakes of 1U sovs each, with 250 added. For three-vear-old colts, Bst 101 b ; fillies, Bst 71b ; the second horse to receive 50 sovs from the stakes. Distance, If miles and 132 yards. The nomination (2 sovs.) closed 40 subscribers. Hon. W. Robinson’s bk c Grip, by bianderer —Awatea, 3 yrs (Derritt) 1 Mr. G. Fraser’s br c Betrayer, by ±raducer —Adalia, 3 yrs, (Matthews). ... - Mr. J. H. Lunn’s b f Marie Antoinette, by Traducer—Marie Theresa, 3 yrs, (Clifford) ... ••• ••• *" „ Betting : Even on Grip, 3 to 2 Betrayer, 5 to 1 Marie Antoinette, 10 to 1 Volunteer. The four were sent away to a most atrocious start, the lot being spread out in single file with Betrayer in front, Grip next, Mane Antoinette third, and Volunteer more than half a dozen lengths behind the filly. After going a few hundred yards, Grip ran up to Betrayer, and shortly afterwards headed him, leadiDg at half a mile by a couple of lengths. Passing the stand the black colt was fully two lengths in front, and Betrayer was a length before Marie Antoinette, Volunteer acting as whipper in four lengths in the rear. Going round to the right, Betrayer began to diminish the gap between him and the favorite and at the same time Volunteer crept up to the mare’s girths. This contest promised to be a very exciting one. At the far side of the course, a mile and a half had been, covered, and here Betrayer momentarily headed Grip, but Derritt let go of his colt’s nead and he speedily took first place again ; coming round to the stright, Marie came with a great rush, and, passing Betrayer, went on in pursuit of Grip Up the straight run in, a grand tussle ensued between the three, but Grip had always the best of it, and, shaking off Betrayer s determined challenge, he won with a lot in hand—bv a length ; Marie third and Volunteer last. Time, 3min. 30secs. There was £320 in the totalisator, and the winner’s odds stood at Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, of 200 sovs. One mile and three-quarters. Hon. W. Robinson’s Foul Play, 5 yrs., 9st.

31bs. (Derritt) 0 Foul Play being only acceptor for this, race, he cantered round and weighed in without much notice being taken of him. Stewards’ Free Handicap, of 100 sovs. Acceptance—s sovs., of which 2 sovs. each will go to the second horse. One mile and a half. Mr. R. Ray’s b m Titania, 6 yrs., Bst.

(Wattle) x Mr. P. Butler’s ch m Luna, 5 yrs., 7st. 61bs. (Redding) ... • ••• 2 Mr. J. Chaffe’s b h Atlantic, 4 yrs, bat. 51bs. (Thompson) ... ... > ... ••• 3 Betting : 3 to 1 on Titania, 2 to 1 agst Luna, 3 to 1 on any other. Titania got the best and Atlantic the worst of another bad start. After getting fairly into their stride, On Dit dispossessed Titania of her lead, and led past the stand by half a length. Two lengths behind the brown filly came Luna, a dean length before Atlantic and Longlands, whom Clifford bad to whip on soon .after. When a mile had been traversed, Titania had again taken the head of affairs, but On Dit stuck pretty close to her till a quarter of a mile from home, when she had shot her bolt and dropped back. Luna went in chase of the favorite, and turning into the straight a semblance of a race took place, but Titania was soon seen to have things all her own way and drawing ahead at every stride, she won hands down by two lengths. Time, 2min. 45sec. There was £328 iu. the totalisator, and odds stood at 2 to 1. Novel Race, of 80 sovs. One mile and a quarter. The winner to be sold by auction with all his engagements, and the whole proceeds of the sale of the horse to go to the funds. Mr. J. H. Lunn’s b g Robin Hood, aged, 7st 41b (Webster) 1 Mr. A. McKay’s ch h Duntroon, aged, 7st (Ridings) ... ... ••• ••• ••• 2 Mr. D. Corsan’s b m Glendyne, o yrs, 7st 71b (Hodson) ... 3 Concrete also ran. Concrete and Robin Hood cut out the running, and led past the stand, with Duntroon a length behind them. At the back of the course Kobin Hood and Duntroon passed Concrete, *nd raced away together, the favorite with a lead. A quarter of a mile from home, when the whip was pulled out to Duntroon and all seemed over, the half brother to Trump Card, however, came with great gameness,, and collaring Robin Hood half way up the straight, Webster had also to use the whip freely, and a great struggle took place, first one and then the other havirg a slight lead, but in the end Mr. Lunn’s horse had a shade the best of it, Webster lifting him first on the post by a head, Glendyne a bad third. Time, 2min. 25sec. There was £204 in the totalisator, and even money on the winner. The Railway Plate of 60 sovs., the gift of David Proudfoot, Esq. Three-quarters of a mile. Weight for age. Mr. Cutt’s b g Mata, 5 yrs, Bst 121 b (Matthew) .. • •• ••• ••• 1 Mr. H. Prince’s br c Hilarious, 2 yrs, 6st 101 b tNolan) ... ... ••• ••• 2 Mr. R. Ray’s b h Templeton, aged, 9st lib (Owner) .. ... ... ••• ••• 3 Betting : 3 to 2 on Mata. Mata got the best of the start, and cutting

out the running, won in the commonest of canters by half a length. Hilarious, who ran alongside him most of the way on suffrance, was second, Templeton last, and three lengths off. Time, Imin. 21sec. Hack Race of 20 sovs. Speedy won, beating four others. Dunedin, February 28.

The annual meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club, which closed to day, was very 'successful in every respect. There was a large attendance, some good contests, and not the slightest hitch occurred during the meeting. Handicap Steeplechase, of 80 sovs. Mr. B. McMaster’s ch g Scamp, aged, 9st 71b (J. Allan) 1 Mi’. J- H. Lunn’s b g Robin Hood, aged 9st 31b, carried 141 b overweight (S. Osborne) .. ... ... ... ••• 2 Mr. J. W. Cotton’s b g Thilo, 6 yrs,

(Owner) ... ... ... ... ••• 3 Mr. Ray’s Lone Hand, aged (McCoy) ... 0 Betting : 3 to 2 against Lone Hand, 2 to 1 Scamp, 3 to 1 others. Scamp led over the first hurdle a length in front of Lone Hand, and three lengths before Thilo, who nearly came to grief ; Robin Hood, who came last, refused at the third jump and fell, Osborne getting unseated and losing a lot of time. At the back of the course, Thilo fell on landing over a jump, and dismounted Cotton, who was some time before be could catch his horse. The next catastrophe occurred at the gorse hedge, which Lone Hand refused repeatedly, in the meantime Scamp was sailing along ahead in beautiful style, clearing all obstacles like a bird, and led past the stand by a quarter of a-mile. Robin Hood was by this time under way again, and followed that distance away, while Thilo was 200 yards behind, and Lone Hand still refusing the hedge. From this point little requires to be said, Scamp having things all his own way, and winning by 200 yards, Robin Hood second, Thilo a bad third, and Lone Hand walking in. The totalisator had £340, there being 63 investors on the wiuDer. Lone Hand was offered at auction by Mr. Stephenson, and passed in at £l5O. Forbury Handicap, of 150 sovs. Hon. W. Robinson’s b h Foul Play, 5 yrs, Bst 111 b (Derritt) 1 Goodman’s Chancellor, 5 yrs, 7st 51b (Ridings) 2 Walter’s Libeller, 3 yrs, 6st 31b (Taylor) ... 3 Ray’s Templeton, aged, 9st (Owner) ... 0 J. Chaffe’s Atlantic, 4 yrs, sst 101 b (Thompson) ... .. ••• ••• 0 Betting : Even agst Foul Play, 3 to 1 Chancellor and Templeton, 4 to 1 Libeller, and 5 to 1 Atlantic. After one false start, the lot were sent off on level terms, but Foul Play was immediately taken to the front, and led past the stand by a clear length. Next to him came Chancellor, Libeller, and Atlantic abreast, with Templeton last. At the three-quarter of a mile Libeller quitted Atlantic’s company, and after racing with Chancellor for a few hundred yards left him behind also, and got up to Foul Play before entering the straight. However, the latter was also re-passed by Chancellor, who chased the leader determinedly up the straight, but could not, however, get Dearer than his quarters, for Foul Play came in full of running, and Derritt sitting still on him landed hircT a comfortable winner by a length, Libeller a good third, Atlantic fourth, and Templeton last. Tim.., 2min. 46sec.

Queen’s Plate, of 80 sovs., with a sweep of 5 sovs. each. Weight for age. Mr. Cutts’ b g Mata, 5 yrs, 9st (Mat-

thews) ... ... ••• ••• ••• I Messrs. Mason and Vallance’s Volunteer, 3 yrs, 7st 71b. (Nolan) ... 2 Betting : 100 to 1 on Mata. This race, which threatened to be a walk oyer for Mata, produced about the most sensational struggle ever seen on the Forbury course. The pace was very slow at first, Nolan keeping Volunteer half a dozen lengths behind Mata until 300 yards from home. He then called on the colt, and coming up hand over hand caught Mata napping, and fairly passed him when in the straight. The excitement as Volunteer was seen to be fully half a length in front, and apparently gaining on the Cup winner, was intense, and Matthews had to ride Mata despeAtely. Very gradually the latter commenced to make up bis lost ground, and two strides froip the post Volunteer’s head was in front, but just on the post Matthews managed to place Mata ju3t far enough forward to justify the judge in declaring it a dead heat. Time, 4min 53<ec. Nolan treated the spectators to a magnificent bit. of riding, the set-to between the pair being very exciting. Mata afterwards had a walk-over. Flying Handicap, 80 sovs. One mile and a distance. Winner of Forbury Cup carrying 51b extra. Hon. W. Robinson’s Foul Play, 5 yrs, 9st 51b, including penalty of 51b (Derritt) ... 1 Mason and Vallance’s Tera, 3 yrs, 6st 51b (Hawkins)... 2 Mr. Butler’s Luna, 5 yrs, 7st 21b (Hoskins) 3 Mr. Ray’s Templeton, aged, Bst 121 b (Walters) ... ••• ••• ••• ••• 3 Mr. Goodman’s Chancellor, 5 yrs, 7st 71b (Ridingß) ... ... ... ••• ••• 3 Mr. Walter’s Billingsgate, 3 yrs, 6st 121 b (Taylor) ... ... ... ••• ••• ® Betting : 2to 1 on Foul Play, 2 to 1 agst Chancellor, 4 to 1 Billingsgate, 6 to 1 others. After three false starts a capital one was effected. Luna and Tera cut out the running, and made the pace a cracker past the enclosure, followed by Foul Play and Chancellor together, Billingsgate and Templeton bringing up the rear. For the first half-mile there were few changes, but then Billingsgate weDt up to Luna and looked as if going right away, but he fell back rapidly, and Tera turned into the straight with|a clear lead. Derritt now made his effort, and Foul Play made his way through his horses, and very quickly shot up in front, and won hands down by half a length, Tera 2nd, Luna 3rd, Templeton 4th, Billingsgate and Chancellor last. Time, 2min 3]jsec.

Benevolent Scurry, 50 sovs. One mile. Taggart’s Spey, 1 ; Johns’ No Name, 2 ; Winter’s Sandfly, 3. Consolation Handicap, 60 sovs. One mile. Mr. Walter’s Libeller, 7st 1 Mr. Lowe’s Marie Antoinette, 7st ... 2 Mr. Goodman’s Chancellor, Bst 31b ... 3 This was won easily by Libeller. Dunedin, March 2.
