NEW CALEDONIAN CONVICTISM.
We are glad to hear that the representations made by the New Zealand Government to the Governments of New South Wales and Queensland, relative to the introduction of a convict element from New Caledonia, have been heartily and promptly responded to The Governments of both colonies deprecate, equally with New Zealand, the turn matters have taken with regard to deportees from the French penal settlement. They promise to co-operate to the utmost with New Zealand to compel France to provide for her criminal refuse, and not at the expense of the Australasian colonies, and to that end will, conjointly with New Zealand, request the Imperial Government to at once submit a decided remonstrance upon this subject to the French Government. They have instructed their Agents-General to cooperate with Sir Julius Vogel in the matter, and instructions have been transmitted to Sir Julius Vogel by the New Zealand Government to work harmoniously with the Agents of the sister colonies. Such action can scarcely fail in effect.
