During the day, information was received stating that the appearance of the weather in the North indicated that a gale might shortly be expected ; and later telegrams showed that it had commenced at Tauranga, as the wind was a strong E.N.E. gale by 7 p.m. Telegraphic warnings for an easterly gale were sent out shortly after midday. The 5 p.m. telegrams show that a heavy swell from the eastward was observed at Oamaru. FI.OUII.IXK !
