LATEST ENGLISH INTELLIGENCE.
By the arrival of the Timbo , from Port Phillip, we have received files of the latest English, Irish, and Scotch journals. The English journals contain little of importance, with the exception of parliamentary movements, ministerial appointment, state of the country, which we regret to say was in a very distressed state, and foreign intelligence, part of which we extract, and insert below. In our next we intend to insert the speech of Sir Robert Peel in the House of Commons on the 16th September last, on the course he intended to pursue during the Session. First Privy Council. —The Queen held a Privy Council on the I4th September, at Windsor Castle. It was attended by His Royal Highness Prince Albert, the Duke of Wellington, the Lord President, the First Lord of the Treasury, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, the First Lord of the Admiralty, the President of the Board of Control, the Paymaster-General, the Lord Steward, and the Master of the Horse, the Marquis of Exeter, Earl Delaware, the Earl of Rossyln, Lord Forester, the Honorable George Lionel Dawson Damer, and Dr. John Nicholl, were sworn of the Privy Council, and took their places at the Board. Dr. Nicholl kissed hands, on being appointed Judge Advocate-General.— Times. ministerial appointments. Sir Charles Bagot is appointed to succeed Lord Sydenham as Governor-General of Canada. Lord Stanley has appointed Colonel Wilbraham to be his private secretary. Lord Aberdeen has appointed Clinton Dawkins, Esq,, of the foreign office, to be his. private secretary ; and Wm. Bruce Stopford, Esq., to be his precis writer. Mr. Blackbourne is appointed to the office of Attorney-General, and Mr. Pennefather to that of Solicitor-General of Ireland. The Hon. Sidney Herbert, M. P., is appointed secretary to the Admiralty. The first lord has appointed Captain Hamilton, R,N,, to the office of his private secretary. Lord Ripen, president of the board of trade, has appointed Alexander Gordon, Esq., nephew of the Earl of Aberdeen, to be his private secretary. Friday’s Gazette (September 11th) announced that the Queen had directed letters patent to be issued, conferring the dignity of Knighthood on Colonel Francis Cockbmn, Governor of Bahama Islands. The Morning Post says, that Sir R. Gordon, G. C. 8., is appointed Ambassador at the Court of Vienna ; and that Lord Burghersh will probably go to Naples, as the representative of Great Britain. Parliamentary Movements —Several of the Members of the House who vacated their seats on receiving appointments in the new Ministry', were re-elected yesterday, —namely, Mr. William Gladstone, for Newark ; Sir Frederick Pollock and Colonel Jonathan! Peel, for the united boroughs of Huntingdon and Godmanchester ; Lord Ernest Bruce and M r. Henry Bingham, for Marlborough; Captain Boldero, for Chippenham ; Lord Jermyn, for Bury St. Edmunds; and Mr. Miles Gaskell, for Wenlock,— Colonial Gazette, Sept. to.
