OBITUARY
HON. HENRY TOWNSHEND The death occurred yesterday at Hi residence in Jerrois Road, Herne Bsj, of the Hon. Henry Townshend, yoookest son of the late Rev. Lord Georjg Osborne Townshend. Mr Townshead, who was. 86 voars of age. came to Xe* Zealand with his two brothers, the Hon. George and the Hon. Ernes; Townshend. about 1577 in the sailin; ship Dilpassand. Their father was the younger brother of the 4th Marquess #i Townshend.
The three brothers joined the Lands and Survey Department soon after their arrival in New Zealand, and tie Hon. Henrv Townshend was engaged in survey worlc in the South Island for» number of years before he came to reside in Auckland in 189". He retired, from the service of the department about 20 years aeo. Mr Townshend devoted a great of time to yachting and shooting, and in later years to trout fishing at Taupe General Sir Charles Townshend, & tinfruished for his heroic defence oflfai in the last war. Ira? a nephew. His cn r surviving brother, the Hon. Ems'!' Townshend. lives at Pieton. Hi? died about three vear*; ago, and Mr I R. V. Townshend. solicitor, of Atr land, i? Tils only son. KARANGA TE KERB The death has occurred of Karangs Te Kere, of Tawata, near Taumarunfflat the age of 87. Her ancestry is traced back to occupants of the Aotea, one ot the original canoes which brought *M Maoris to Neve Zealand. A prominent figure among the Maw*; of the district. Karanga Te Kere nao an extensive knowledge of nabtf affairs. She. together with other me® bers of her family, was connected witi the lontr case involving the ownershi' of the Wanganui River, which *8 originated by the late Riki Kotuku an< \V harawliara Topine. Karanga Te Ker is survived by two sons and-' F daughters.
