LEAGUE FOOTBALL

DOMINION COUNCIL STANDARD OF THE PLAY The standard of play in New Zealand was not so high as that in 1938 owing to lack international competition, said the president. Mr J A. Redwood, at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby League last evening. The only game of consequence since tile war was that between the North and South Islands last season, from which the takings amounted to £732. ('he president stated that he had recently visited Australia and there was every indication of a representative team visiting the Dominion in the near future. Referring to the progress by various leagues, Mr Redwood mentioned that the code had started again in laranaki, and the South Auckland league had liquidated the whole of a debt on its fine playing ground. The assets of the league amounted to £1509. This was very creditable, as thore had been no activities overseas. The only actual revenue came from the annual iriter-island game. The profit on that game was £335. In answer to a question on the assets, Mr Redwood said a ground in Hawkc's Bay was a valuable football property shown at £258, while a further ground at Whangarei was valued at £IOO Generally the financial position was sound. The cash deposits amounted 10 w ~7 ani ' *"0 invested in war bonds. Mr H. C. McCready said that the code had not functioned in the Bay of Plenty district since the war, but he hoped competition would he restarted shortly. He appealed for greater efforts and a more keen interest by the controlling body. He suggested that a change in the constitution was necessary for smaller leagues to have a voice in the national control of the code. Mr J. W. Watson, Auckland, said the 1946 season promised to be a record one. While the standard of play might not be so high as that in 1938. it was certainly better than in 1912. He slated that the gate receipts this season were £.">oo higher than any year since the war started. Mr C. Siddle, president of the South Auckland league, said the code had now been reestablished in Hamilton, and during the next few months more senior teams were likely in other districts. Schoolboy football was making good progress. He paid a tribute to the splendid co-operation of other sports bodies in making Davis Park, the home of the league code in South Auckland. Mr S. Watene made a strong appeal for a return immediately of the Maori Waitangi Shield games. He stressed the point that the Maori hoard of control had heen ignored in the drawing up of a comprehensive representative programme for this season. He detailed the results of recent visits to country centres, where the Maori player was still keen to show his ability. Mr Redwood gave an assurance that the appeal would receive early attention. In returning thanks for his re-election as president, Mr Redwood said there was a great future for the game in New Zealand. Much work, however, had to be done to bring the code up to its pre-war standard. It was decided to affiliate with the New Zealand Council of Sport. The following officers were elected:—Patron, the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall; president, Mr J. A. Redwood; vice-presidents, Messrs J. A. Watson (Auckland), C. Siddle (South Auckland), B. Wells (Taranaki), B. Connors (West Coast), T. Naylor K.Janteri'bury), T. P. Paikea, M.P. (Maori control). W. Appleton (Wellington).
