FAT LAMB TRADE COMPETITION RESUMED HIGH AUCKLAND STANDARD Over 480 lambs were penned in the Auckland district fat lamb competition held at the Southdown works of the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company, Ltd., yesterday. The first held for three years, the competition was reinstated at the request of the New Zealand Meat Producers Board. In spite of the break in the competitions the interest of producers was keen, and they attended the judging in larger numbers than ever before. ' The lambs were judged in the pen and later on the hooks. In the dressed class lambs in exhibitors' two entries were interchangeable to give the best three lambs on the hooks. Taken on the whole a very fine line of lambs was entered and the judges, while admitting that their task had been made very difficult, congratulated growers upon the closeness of the competition and on the even standard set. In presenting the diplomas won, Mr C. H. Williamson, the Meat Board's supervising grader for the Hawke's Bay district, who assisted in judging, said the winning lamb on hooks set a very high standard and presented a typo ideal for the market. It was run very close by the second lamb, and producers were fortunate to have such outstanding types demonstrated. If New Zealand produced all her lambs of the standard of the winner the rest of the world would have something to face, he said. So far as the groups were concerned Mr Williamson said that in conformity with the board's desire the lambs were a little heavier and at the same time of slightly higher standard. Actually, he said, the standard of the top lambs in Auckland was hetter this year than those of Hawke's Bay. Results were: Pen of three on the hoof (judges, Messrs T. Marks and J. S. Thomas): J. Slater (Pukekawa), 1; R. R. Bradley (Helensville). 2: R. Macklow (Waimaukn), 3; E. A. Urquhart (Karaka), 4; J. Slater, 5. The best lamb on hoof was awarded to Mr It. Hensen (Mangatangi). i Three lambs on hooks (judges. Messrs F. Merritt. H. Kneebone and C. H. Williamson): J. Slater (Pnkekawa), 1; Taumata Investment Company (Waimauku). 2; R. Henry (Waian Pa) 3 'ln addition to these competitors diplomas 'were awarded to the following for dressed lambs: R. Macklow. F. Shuker (Mangatangi). G. Willis (Pukekawa). N. J. Fulton (Pukekawa). A. Logan (Pukekawa), W J. Dawson (Papatoetoe). Braithwaite and Copeland (Waimauku). The best lamb on hooks was awarded to Mr R. Macklow. THEFT OF PAINT STOLEN FROM EMPLOYERS The theft of paint and brushes valued nt £3 6s 6d, the property ,of his emplovers, was admitted by Alexander Stephen McGregor, painter, aged 33 (Mr Nohle), heforo Mr J. H. Lnxford, S.M., yesterday. Accused denied a charge of soiling tickets in a lottery. Detective-Sergeant Aplin said that thefts of paint led to accused being interviewed by the police. He admitted taking paint in small quantities over a period. During a search of his premises, a quantity of lottery tickets was found, and accused admitted selling them over the last six months on a commission basis. Counsel said it was a practice among employees to take small .quantities of paint'if they required it. Accused was a good worker, < and hjs firm was prepared to take him back. Called at the magistrate's request, the firm's manager said there had been occasions when some of the oldest employees with long periods of service to their credit had been allowed small quantities of paint. Accused was not one of these men, but the firm was prepared to re-employ him. Stating that he was very diffident about not imposing a prison sentence, the magistrate fined accused £lO, immediate payment being ordered, in default 21 days' imprisonment.
