BURMA ADVANCE

KALEMYO OCCUPED

JAPANESE LANES CUT*

CHINESE NEARING BHAMO (Reed. 11.10 p.m.) LONDON, Nov.'l6 East African forces of the British 14th Army in North-west Burma have" occupied Kalemyo, the Japanese communication base barring the way. to the Chindwin River, which lies 16 miles to the east. Kalemyo had been threatened by East African troops driving down from the north and by troops of the Fifth Indian Division coming from the west. A link-up of these forces was reported yesterday. The taking of Kaleinyo represents the end of a 200-mile fighting advance by the Fifth Division, and now any Japanese remaining south or east are faced with the choice of staying put or taking action across jungles with only precipitous tracks through them. The South-east Asia Command communique also reports that Chinese troops advancing on Bhamo, in Northeast Burma, were yesterday only a mile east of the town and that the two main roads south from Bhamo have been cut by other Chinese troops.
