RAILWAY TRADESMEN

WAGES DURING ILLNESS (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Tuesday Before the Hallways Tribunal today, Mr T. F. Gebbio, advocate of the Railway Tradesmen's Association, claimed that full payment of wages should be made to tradesmen off duty through sickness or injury. It was proposed that the cost be shared by the Social Security Department and the Railway Department, or by the railways meeting the full costs iu the same way as it met interest on capital invested in unprofitable services, or by subsidy from the Consolidated Fund. Mr Gcbbie explained that, in effect, this meant asking the department -to subsidise the difference between the value of workers' compensation and full pay for accident cases. Mr A. F. Taylor, industrial officer, said the immediate additional cost to the department would be at least £178,000 and, if made actuarial, a matter possibly of £250,000 would be needed to start the fund.
