BRILLIANT TRIAL SWEET BISCUIT GOES FAST GALLOP WITH BEAU VAALS Sterling efforts by the Railway Handicap candidates. Sweet-Biscuit and Cambria, were features of the work at Takanini yesterday. Cornish, Lord Chancellor. Merry May, Coronaire and Balfron also went well. The middle grass track was in excellent order and fast times were recorded. Sweet Biscuit and Beau Yaals began evenly, but the former gradually forged ahead, and, when urged, drew away to finish dear at the end of six furlongs in 1.13 3-j. The first three furlongs were run in 35 2-sfi. It was one of the most impressive gallops of the season. Cambria was also seen in a favourable light when he beat Route March over six furlongs in 1.14. The first three furlongs were run in 35 3-os and Cambria finished attractively. Cambria is superbly fit and has en excellent chance in the Railway Handicnp. in which he was second last year, when he appeared uniucky. Y'ater Vixen, after being • resifained in the first furlong, completed six furlongs in 1.16 3-5. Sousa accompanied her over the last five in 1.3. Sousa's work has been patchy, but he shaped well on this occasion. Balfron and Royal Merit were associated over seven furlongs in 1.29. Both should run prominently in the Christmas Handicap. Cornish excelled himself to defeat Jeff by a length over seven furlongs in 1.25. The first half-mile was run in 48 3-ss. The dash Cornish has been displaying of late indicates an early return to the winning list. A sound effort was credited to Lord Chancellor, who ran the last mile of a mile and e?quarter in 1.42. Representative brougnt him home over the last six furlongs in 1.15 2-5. Lord Chancellor is fit and his latest work has been very pleasing. Representative tss made a surprisingly quick recovery from the injuries he received on his journey back from Riccarton after the New Zealand Cup. Merry May and Foxola were on terms after running a mile in 1.44. They were allowed to go comfortably in the early part, the first half-mile taking 52 3-5s and the first five furlongs 1.6. Sleepy Fox defeated Laddie Boy by several lengths over half a mile in 495. Another useful effort was that of Artificer, who seemed to have the measure of Gay Chat after coverincr four furlongs in 49 3-ss. Artificer is promising. Coronaire again worked well to defeat Plassida over five furlongs in the smart time of 1.1 3-5 and he left the impression that he could have done better. After being in the rear for the greater portion of the journey Coronaire ran up to Plassida very quickly when required. Beau Dink, who has been recording some nice efforts of late, impressed by running five furlongs in 1.1 2-5.

Seven Furlongs.—Brief, 1.29 2-5; British Patrol and Spirillum. 1.31.So far the only unlikely starter from Takanini on the first day at Ellerslie is Sir Bian, who over-reached and cut himself. It is not expesifd that he will contest the Queen s Plate. Gay Chat is expected to contest the Nursery Handicap in preference to the Great Northern Foal Stakes.
