GENERAL SPORTS NEWS News that Stan McCabe will be forced t-o retire from cricket as the result of a foot injury comes as a .severe blow to Australian cricket, states a Melbourne writer. McCabe is only 33, and one hesitates to accept this as final. Even if there were to be no more first-class cricket for two or three years, he could still be a useful player for New South Wales and, perhaps, for Australia. It is to be hoped the injury is not as permanent as has been suggested. McCabe has not been one of the luckiest of cricketers and has had more than his share of injuries. If his injury can be remedied there might still be a chance that, we will see more of his glorious baiting in the future. Barry White, head groundsman at Lords for 26 years, died from pleurisy last week at the age of 74. White prepared many test, wickets between 1910 and 1936; performing with distinction a difficult task as the M.C.C. did not permit over-prepared pitches. With matches there daily during the summer, White had to make natural wickets able to stand the wear and tear of the three-day matches. One of bis most awkward experiences occurred in the 1926 Anglo-Austraiian test, when early in the morning it was discovered that someone had turned on a hose, resulting in a large area of the ground being saturated close to the wicket. White, after hours of labour soaking up the water and covering the area with sawdust, got the ground ready for play just in time. Of seventy children who offered themselves for the experimental class during a learn-to-swim campaign in the Wnirarapa recently, 16 actually swam a distance of 10yds after half an hour's tuition. That is but one illustration of the excellent results brine achieved by the Wellington Swimming Centre through its educational officer, Mr. (!. C. Head, and is instructress, Mrs. I. McCabe, with their demonstration team—six children aged from 10 to 12 years. The instructional party visited Featherston, Martinborough, Carterton and Masterton. The method of teaching was shown, and the practical side of (he work demonstrated in such a way as to be immediately effective. It is a "mass production" plan, and it promises to bring further outstanding results. From the initial teaching it is hoped that the clubs and schools will carry on where it is not possible for the centre's instructors to be in regular attendance. The scheme is one of great possibilities, states the Sports Post, further evidence of which was shown by about RO per cent of a class, taken b.v a centre official at Hataitai, learning to swim in one lesson. COPPER FROM MOUNT ISA BRISBANE. Dec. 39 The Australian Minister for Supply and Shipping, Mr. Beasley, has stated that pending a final decision production of copper at Mount L=a and by gougers who forward ore to the plant will be continued until February 28. It was previously announced hy Mr. Beaslev that the Government had decided there would he no market in Australia for Mount Tsa copper after January.
