ORSHA OFFENSIVE

GREAT RUSSIAN DRIVE BERLIN MILITARY REPORTS BATTLES IN SNOWDRIFTS (Reed. 10.10 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 5 The Paris radio quotes Berlin military officials as saying that the Orsha sector, west of Smolensk in White Russia, has now become the principal battlefield on the Russian front. The Russians here have thrown in eight more divisions. At least 30 Soviet divisions are now battling against the German lines there. A communique from the German High Command says that the Russians on the Smolensk-Orsha road again launched fierce attacks, for the fourth day in succession. Big defensive battles are being fought in dense snowdrifts. The German news agency commentator von Hammer, referring to this offensive, says: "Immense tank formations and infantry divisions are being hurled into battle. The Russians have again attempted to force a breakthrough to Orsha." No mention has yet been made in Soviet statements of this offensive.
