Patriotic Donation Approval of the decision of the pupils of the Hamilton High School to donate £"100 to the Hamilton Patriotic Committee was given at a meeting of the board of governors. The money was raised by the recent production of a play by the pupils. Postmen Sell Stamps The Auckland total in this year's health stamp campaign has been greatly assisted bv a postmen's drive in the city, resulting in over £*looo worth of "princess" stamps being sold. One postman's persuasive efforts yielded nearly £350, a very considerable percentage of the city's total of £3OOO for the first month of the campaign. Suntan and Sunburn Burned rather than suntanned skins are expected to be in evidence in Auckland to-day as a result of yesterday's crowds at the beaches. The day had not only the heat of the summer sun, but sufficient wind to cause windburn. Sunburn is such an easily preventive trouble that in the services it comes under the heading of self-inflicted injuries. Suntan is acquired gradually. Search for Radium Needle A widespread search was instituted on Friday in the Auckland Hospital, its grounds and beyond the precincts for a radium needle which had been lost. Four scientists attached to the physics department of the university were called in, and with the aid of an electrical apparatus the needle, the replacement value of .which is said to be about £300,_ was discovered on Saturday morning. High Barometer Readings The fine weather over the week-end was accompanied by high barometer readings, and at midnight last night pressure was recorded at 30.36 in., the highest since October 20, when 30.39 in. was recorded. The week-end's sudden change to high barometric pressure followed qlosely upon a spell of low readings during inclement weather in the middle of last week. The barometer rose nine points in the 24 hours ended at midnight. Only Eight Walk Of the 200 children attending the Tapawera District High School only eight walk to school, stated the secretary of the Nelson Education Board, giving evidence before the Armed Forces Appeal Board in an appeal f< * a teacher-driver. "There are eight buses running to the school," he said. "When they are all leaving at about 3.30 each afternoon the place is quite a city. Half an hour later it's just Tapawera again." Whisky Prices in 1908 A Job's comforter is haying a little amusement in Auckland with an advertisement from an issue of the Heuald in 1908. In these days, when a publican can extract up to 38 nips at ninepence or a shilling each from a bottle ; of whisky, it is of interest, but little consolation, to be reminded by the advertisement that a well-known Queen Street hotel was soliciting orders for popular brands at 3s 9d to 4s 6d a quart bottle. Neither for the whisky, nor the gin, rum and sherry which were also freely proffered at comparable prices, was there any suggestion that certain quantities of beer had to be taken, as is the case nowadays when supplies are sought wholesale, which is about the only way a bottle of spirits <-au be obtained, unless the purchase? is willing to pay "bowser" rates.
