SOLDIERS' RUGBY
MATCH IN NEW CALEDONIA (Official War Correspondent, N.Z.E.F.) NEW CALEDONIA, June 27 To the skirl of bagpipes and the stirring rhythm of a military brass band, teams representing • a Scots battalion and an infantry battalion took the field "Somewhere in New Caledonia" on Saturday afternoon, and fought a thrilling game for the honour of representing their brigade in the forthcoming competition for the coveted Barrowclough Cup —a handsome trophy presented by MajorGeneral H. E. Barrowclough, D.5.0., M.C., for Rugby competition between units of the New Zealand Division in New Caledonia. A last-minute try—the only points registered throughout a gruelling period of 90 minutes' play—brought a spectacular and cleanly-con-tested game to its conclusion, and gave victory to the Scots, who, in spite of their inability to obtain a fair share of the ball from the set scrums, had fought tigerishly throughout. The teams were as follows: Scots.—S. Richardson (South Canterbury), .\f. H. Glassford (Poverty Bay), J. Blair (Buller). I. V. McLean (Wanganui). R. Whittin gt on (Wellington), G. H. l.awson (Auckland), M. Charlton (Auckland), A. Rogers (Auckland), Y. Iv. Fleming (Palmerstou North). A. F. Wright (Hawke's Bay), J. M. Galloway (Wellington), P. A. Mcßeat.li (Inglewood), B. P. Sheehan (Wellington), X. S. Clotworlhy (Whangarei), D. H. Ward (King Country). Infantry.—-E. S. F. Holland (Christchurch). C. E. Nairn (Waipawa), R. Shepherd (I'aranaki), D. F. Paterson (Wellington), M. P. Syillane (Otago), S. Lavery (Christchurch), \\. Edminston (Port Chalmers) E. E. Hope (Dannevirke), J. T. Walker (\\ airarapa). M. F. Marshmint (Wellington), R. G. Rutherford (New Plymouth), F. Armstrong (Hawke's Bay), R. W. Phizacklea (Wanganui), A. C. O'Byrne (Taranaki), A. W. Young (Wellington). Scots' halfback, Charlton, learned his football at the Takapuna (Auckland) Grammar School. He impressed as a fine all-round player, who would continue to improve with each game. Another young player who attracted attention as a five-eighths of more than average ability was Lawson, who. prior to service in the Army, wore the red and black hoops of Otahuhu in the Auckland Rugby Union's championship competition, and the junior representative colours of Wairarapa. Among an extraordinarily well-balanced pack of forwards, Mcßeath toiled honestly throughout the and capped a fine display with a meritorious try when, following a hectic forward rush, he scooped up the rolling ball and dived over near the corner. Fast following up was a feature of tiis game. The Infantry fifteen was well served at the base of the scrum by Edminston, whose dive passes left little to be desired. In the early stages of the game he appeared prone to make too much of the line, but later he provided excellent service for those outside him. and varied his play with rare judgment. Fiveeighths Spillane needs little introduction to New Zealand readers, particularly those in the South Island, as he has represented (It ago with great credit. Spillane, who captained his team, was an admirable pivot, who varied his play nicely. Outstanding forwards for Infantry were Phizacklea, former Wanganui and Manawatu representative, Marshmint, who has worn the familiar black jersey and white shorts of Wellington, and Armstrong, whose work in the line-outs was of great benefit to his team mates. SECONDARY SCHOOLS' GAMES A Press Association message from Invercargill states that Southland Boys' High School beat Waitaki Boys' High School at Rugby by 9 points to 8. 'ln a match at Hawera. New Plymouth Boys' High School beat St. Patrick's College (Silverstream) by 0 points to 3.
