FINE FAMILY RECORD
GALLANT MAORI OFFICER Awarded the Distinguished Service Order for bravery at Takrouna, Lieutenant Matarelma Wikiriwhi—the second New Zealand subaltern to receive this award in the present war —is a member of a Maori family with an outstanding scholastic and military record. A son of the late Mr. Eruera Wikiriwhi, of Te Arawa tribe, and a grandson of Guide Sophia, he is one of four brothers in uniform, three being overseas and the other in the Second Maori Battalion. A fifth is in the Home Guard. Each of the five brothers gained the Makarini Scholarship at Whakarewarewa and matriculated at Te Ante College. One, now a sergeant in the Middle East, was nominated for a Rhodes Scholarship. Lieutenant Wikiriwhi; wno was in poor health after leaving Te. Autu went to five with a sister at Cape Runaway and took" up work on sheep stations in that district. As soon as war broke out lie enlisted in the Maori Battalion and went away as a private. He has served in all the campaigns from Greece to Tunisia.
