FUR COAT LURE
MAID'S DAY OFF DOMESTIC HELP PROBLEM SAN FRANCISCO, May 27 The suggestion is being made in America that any housewife who finds domestic help difficult to obtain should offer to allow the maid to wear her employer's mink coat. The following advertisement appeared under "Help Wanted" in the Newark News the other day: "Girl (whito^: General housework, own room, radio; good salary; nice home for right party; can wear my mink coat for day off. Mrs. Burns, 133 Keer Avenue, Newark, WA 3-2361.'' The telephone was kept so busy that afternoon and evening that at 11 p.m. a weary Mrs. Burns left the receiver off the hook. The calls, .Mrs. Burns related, varied from that of a man who wanted to know whether a similar offer might solve his domestic problem to that of a man who hoped it would induce his lazy sister to take the job. One woman wished to know if she could have the job immediately—and could she have Saturday night olf. She had an appointment with a gentleman friend she wished to impress. Another inquired what she might wear when it got too hot for mink. Virtually all asked the size of the coat before asking the size of the pay envelope. In all, Mrs. Burns estimated, there were 100 calls. Most eager inquirer of all was the man who pleaded his wife be given the job "because she's always wanted a mink coat and .1 can't got one for her."
