THE LEAGUE CODE

CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES | OTAHUHU TEAM'S SUCCESS The second series of championship matches, played at Carlaw Park under control of the Auckland Rugby League on Saturday afternoon, provided excellent competition, and both games on the main ground were closely contested. Fast and open play was witnessed by a good attendance. Slight showers made the ball greasy. Otahuhu made its first appearance in the senior championship, and, with good all-round play snatched a fine win against Newton by 19 points to 18. Otahuhu had a good deal the better of the first spell and led at half-time by 15 points to 7. Superior back play enabled Newton to retrieve its position in the second half, and it was a little unlucky not to win. Otahuhu has a good young team. Its forwards are powerful in the loose, and good tacklers. Gregory. the Newton captain, scored two spectacular tries, the first being a brilliant solo effort. There was little to choose between tho teams, good goal-kicking by Mullins actually deciding the issue in favour of Otahuhu. 'Lho winning team's inside backs, Mullins, Speedy and McManus, were faster than the opposition, and turned each opportunity to better advantage. Mullins played a fine game and was the pivot of the attack. R. Ilalsey, on the wing, showed initiative on attack, and scored one good try. Among the forwards, N. Johnson, A. and J. Thompson, and Doran were prominent Besides Gregory, Silva, Newton's halfback, was in every movement, and Richards showed dash on the wing. Kendall played his best football in the second spell. Richmond created a surprise by winning an interesting curtain-raiser game by one point against Manukau. last j ear's champion side. Results were:—Otahuhu, 19 (tries by R. Halsey, Mullins, M. Johnson, Mullins 'converting two and . kicking three penalty goals), Newton, 18 (tries by Gregory 2, Kendal) and Richards, Gregory kicking two penalty goals, and Rangi converting one try); Richmond, 8 (tries by L. ASSOCIATION GAMES The second 6eries of the first division championship and the opening matches of the junior grades of the .Auckland Football Association produced good football on Saturday afternoon. The main attraction at Blandford Park, between Papakura and .North Shore, resulted in a win for the Service side by the odd goal in three after a match which was full of thrills. Papakura was well served by Wilson, ex-Otago representative, at centrehalf, and he distributed the play to advantage, while the wing halves, M. Dick (Onehunga) and Todd (Wellington) showed out with constructive tackling and placing. Rcid. the Service centre-forward, and an Irish ■Amateur League player, pleased with clever footwork, but the forwards missed many opportunities by shooting over the goal.
