SCHOOL RAID SHELTERS

GISBORNE BOARD'S DECISION (0.C.) GISBORNE, Thursday The heavy expense of constructing air raid shelters is not considered -warranted by the Gisborne High School Board of Governors, which decided that slit trenches would afford adequate protection. It was estimated that the cost of the construction of shelters would be £2OOO. "In my opinion there is at present adequate protection in the 600 yds of slit trenches provided," stated the rector, Mr. J. E. Hutton, in a letter. "I think, and probably the parents do also, that the amount of money involved would be better devoted to providing equipment and offensive weapons for the men who will be fighting. Our pupils are not young and irresponsible children. In fact, if an alarm goes, 70 boys are committed under the Emergency Precautions Scheme, to hurry to, thfeir appointed places."
