REFUGEE DOCTORS
PRACTISE IN DOMINION
FIFTEEN ALREADY QUALIFIED
OTHERS STILL AT UNIVERSITY
(0.C.) DIJNEDIN, iaocdiy Fifteen refugee d6ctors have qualified to practise in New Zealand ;:ince the first one was admitted to the Medical School of Otago University in 1935, and 11 more will qualify at tho end of this year if they pass the necessary examinations. A total of 43 refugee medical men have been granted admission to the Dominion out of 67 who applied for permission to practise, and the balance of the permits have, lapsed. Eight men were admitted directly to practice in New Zealand as they held British qualifications. The first refugee doctor entered the Medical School in 1935 and qualified the same year. At that time the authorities required them to do only one year at the school, but in 1938 the period was extended three years. Before that year, however, three more had qualified. Fourteen men started their three years' course in 1938 and 1939, and the first qualified in 1940, when eight more were admitted. Ten qualified last year and there are still 11 at the university. The number of refugee doctors practising in the Dominion at the end of this year will be 34, provided the remaining 11 complete their studies. Refugee doctors in New Zealand approached the Government after the cutbreak of war and offered to practise in any place where they might be needed. With some districts in New Zealand short of medical men owing to the calls of the military authorities, the Government took advantage of the offer, and so far approximately six men have been placed by the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer. The services of others will probably be availed of in future as the necessity arises.
