STEEL AND PIG IRON
DOMINION SUPPLY POSITION
[BY TELEGItAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION! NELSON, Monday The Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, said that difficulties were still being experienced in obtaining adequate supplies of steel, although the position was in some respects more promising than had been the case for some time. Mr. Sullivan referred to certain undertakings given by the United Kingdom and Australian Governments, and added that, if those promises materialised and the shipping position did not become more difficult, he would be relieved of a very great anxiety. In addition, lie had given instructions for an intensified drive for the recovery of old steel in derelict ships and pipe lines. In the matter of supplies of pig iron, fair supplies were being obtained from Australia, but if they should fail the reconditioned plant at Otiekaka would be brought into operation, although that would create some technical and economic difficulties.
