NAVAL PROMOTION

AUCKLANDER'S COMMISSION Advice has been received by Mrs. E. Holmes, of Morrinsville, that her husband, Ordinary-Seamat) Ernest Holmes, has been promoted to temporary sublieutenant in the Royal Navy. SubLieutenant Holmes left New Zealand in January, 1941, under Scheme B, as «m

ordinary seaman. After, three months' training he served for four months in the light cruiser Manxman. While convoying troops and munitions to Malta she was engaged in several actions. Sub-Lieutenant Holmes was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, and prior to enlistment was employed by J. .1. Craig, Limited. He was well known in rifle-shooting and hockey circles, and was a member of the Auckland University harriers' team. He is the third son of Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Holmes, of Remuera.
