PHILOSOPHICAL RAJAH
OPTIMISTIC AS TO FUTURE
SYDNEY, Jan. 26 Although he no longer has a home, and his family is scattered throughout the world, the Rajah of Sarawak, Sir Charles Vvner-Brooke, is philosophical. He is now in Sydney. Sir Charles said the only news he had received from Sarawak since the Japanese invasion was that SOQ Punjabi troops had fought gallantly against the Japanese, and had given up only when 400 had been killed. He felt sure he would soon be able to return to his,, palace at Kuching. It riled him, he admitted, to think of the Japanese taking over his palace, "playing pool on his billiard table," and helping themselves to all his goods. Meanwhile he was grateful to be able to return to Australia, and he intended to live in Sydney for the time. Sir Charles left Australia on December 14 after a brief visit to return to Sarawak, but by the ibime ho had reached Sourabaya, Sarawak was in Japanese hands. The Ranee of Sarawak, who visited Australia in October, is in the Unitcji States. Their three daughters, the Countess of Inchcape, Mrs. Harry Roy and Mrs. Nancy Gregory, are in England. - ■«
