LEPERS' GRATITUDE
GIFTS FROM NEW ZEALAND
An acknowledgement of parcels of clothing and gifts sent at Christmas by New Zealanders to Makogai Island has been received by Mr. D. L. Thomas, of Mount Albert, organiser of the annual appeal, from Dr. C. J. Austin, medical superintendent of the leper station . After expressing thanks to all contributors, Dr. Austin says:—"The patients are as surprised as we are at the marvellous way in which you maintain the standard of these gifts, and in. their speeches of thanks express won-* der that, in spite of the troubles and difficulties throughout tho world, New Zealand is still able to find time and money to care for them. "You will be glad to hear that up to the present, the patients have suffered no serious shortages that we have not been able to make up for in other ways. They have, however, taken very seriously the Governor's appeal to everyone in the colony to plant more food. The more able-bodied among them are not only producing • extra food, but at the same time doing themselves a lot of good by the healthy, open-air exercise."
