CONTINUOUS WATCH
AIR OBSERVER CORPS
AUSTRALIAN VOLUNTEERS
MELBOTJBiNE, Jan. 25 The Federal Government has decided to establish an air observer organisation numbering several thousand unpaid volunteers, both men and women, who will report the approach of hostile aircraft. The formation of coastal lines of observation posts, augmented by rings of similar posts around vital industrial centres, is envisaged in the general plan. The new volunteer air observers' corps will supplement the existing network of naval, military and air reporting officers. Announcing details, the Minister for Air, Mr. Drakeford, said that since Japan had entered the war the Government had determined to provide every possible safeguard to give the Commonwealth the utmost warning of aerial aggression. Observer p6sts would be linked to control centres, Mr. Drakeford added. Each post would be manned by a minimum of six to eight men and women under the command of a volunteer chief observer. A continuous watch would be kept.
