BRITISH IN CHINA
INFORMATION AWAITED DOMINION MISSIONARIES _ News is anxiously awaited of many New Zealand missionaries in China who will be profoundly affected by the outbreak of hostilities in the Far East. In the South China Mission of the Presbyterian Church there are a number of missionaries widely known in the Dominion. At present means of communicating with them are uncertain, but every effort is being made by the mission authorities to get into touch with them. In Hongkong at present are Mrs. H. Davies, who has been for over 30 years in China, and Dr. J. C. Loan and the Rev. J. Johnston, who recently went there and are at present engaged in language study. On the mainland at Kowloon is Miss F. G. Ogilvie, in charge of a school. The Rev. H. Davies. who like Mrs. Davies is a veteran of the mission, is the only one at present stationed in Canton. At the Kong Chuen Mission Hospital, 12 miles north of Canton, are tho Rev, E. G. Jansen, Dr. G. Gratzer, a refugee doctor employed by the church, and Mrs. Gratzer, Sister D. Robertson, Sister A. Lilburne and Miss F. M. Wilson. The only remaining member of the staff in China is Nurse Annie I. James, who conducts a hospital at Kaai Hau, about 50 miles north of Canton, in an area which the Chinese have freed from Japanese control. Three other members of tho staff, Miss E. N. Reid, Miss A. M. Cook and Miss A. Yansen, are at present in Australia. The old-established China Inland Mission with its stations in all parts of China has a number of New Zealanders on its staff in occupied China. Stationed in Shanghai, where the Japanese are now in possession, are Mr. A. Hayman, of Auckland, and Mrs. Havman. Mr. G. W. Gibb, of Auckland, and Miss 11. Reid, of Cliristchurch. Miss N. Edwards is also probably there, but may be at Chefoo. At Chefoo the China Inland Mission has a school for the children of European missionaries with about 300 pupils and Miss R. Dobson is a New Zealander on its staff. Other New Zealanders are stationed further inland and* to the north in parts not j under Japanese control. I
