AIRMEN PROMOTED
YOUNG SQUADRON-LEADER (0.C.) NAPIER, Monday The promotion of Flight-Lieutenant Freeman Jess Steel, aged 23, son of Mr, F. J. Steel, of Napier, to squadronleader, was advised "in a cablegram received by Mr. Steel to-day.
Squadron-Leader Steel was educated at the Napier Boys' High School and entered the service of the Public Works Department as a clerk in 1937. He left for overseas service with the Royal Air Force about 12 months ago and has been engaged on 30 raids over occupied territory.
COMMISSIONED IN CANADA PILOT-OFFICER R. PUTTICK Cabled advice was received yesterday by Mr. and Mrs. Claude H. Puttick, Alba Road, Epsom, that their son, Ronald Puttick, aged 19, has gained his wings and been commissioned in Canada.
Pilot-Officer Puttick was educated at the School and the Auckland Grammar School and was employed in the Customs Department at Auckland until ho enlisted in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He was posted to Levin last May, gaining second place in a class of 200, and in later training at Whanuapai gained second place in the school of flying. One brother, Gunner C. Puttick, is a prisoner of war in Germany, and a second is serving with the forces in New Zealand.
