RELIEF WORKERS
BIG DROP IN NUMBERS The cvimbing of the ranks of the No. 13 sohoi.no roli of workors. whioh tins been carried out by the employment branch of the Labour Department lor some time, has resulted in large transfers of me/i to private industry, in the area extending from l'ukekohe to Warkworth, a total of 2<K)O men was employed on the scheme in June, VJ-M. This number was reduced to about 2000 by June. 1910. and the total today is 'less than 900. Able-bodied men without age disability are no longer sent to relief works under the scln-me and the large majority of men now employed are stated 'to have Mome handicap which makes the obtaining of private employment rather dilfiewilt. Some able-bodied men have been permitted to remain on important works. Private industry has not taken all the men who have' been removed from the No. 13 scheme.' A feature has been the large number of men whom local bodies were not disposed to lost* They ero not on the permanent staffs of the local bodies concern ed.
