RAID ON CABARET

LIQUOR AT DANCE HALL

The joint managers of a dance cabaret at Buckland's Beach, Fox Maule Carnachan (Mr. Goldwater), and Forrest Leitcli Walker (Mr. Mahony), pleaded guilty in the Otahuhu Police Court before Mr. J. Morling, S.M., yesterday to a charge of permitting liquor to be consumed at a public dance. Thirteen patrons, seven men and six women, were charged with being found in possession of liquor. Senior-Sergeant Daly said a police raid was made on the cabaret on April 12. The police had had the hall under supervision since May, 1910. as the result of complaints from residents about the conduct of the patrons outside the hall. In all. 17 patrons had been convicted on charges of being in possession of liquor. When the patronage of the dances waned, the management had formed a club and drawn up rules, which did not comply with the law.

Counsel said the managers had thought they were keeping within the law. Each defendant manager was fined £8 and costs, and lines ranging from £1 to £3 were imposed on the 13 patrons. The patron of a dance held at Otahuhu was convicted on a similar charge and fined £1 and costs.
