CALLED TO ARMS

OYER 11,000 MEN (

TERRITORIAL SERVICE j

TRAINING BEGINS IN AUGUST

[BY TKf.EGHAPH —J'KESS ASSOCIATION"] WELLINGTON, Tuesday

A further 11,111 men were called up for territorial service by Gazette issued this evening. The Minister of National Service, the Hon. R. Semplo, said that this Gazette contains the names of those men of 18 who had registered up to about June 6. 1940. and those who have attained the ages of 19 and 41 since the last territorial Gazette was published. A further Gazette will be issued in about one month's time which will include all those persons of 18 who are not included in the present Gazette and also any further men who have attained 1!) and 41.

The following summary shows the number of persons called in each rnilitary area: —Area No. 1 'Auckland), J9l •}; No. 2 (I'aeroa), 643; No. 3 (Whangarei), 375; No. 4 (Hamilton), (ill; No 5 (Wellington), 1358; No. 6 (Wanganui), 722; No. (Napier), 948; No. 8 (New Plymouth), 492; No. 9 (Nelson), 517; No. 10 (Christchurch), 1816; No. II (Dunedin). 963; No. 12 (lnvercargill). 750; total. 11,111. On being asked when the men called in this ballot would be required to enter camp, Mr. Scmple said it would depend on how soon they could be medically examined and whether there would be sufficient camp accommodation in the various districts to accommodate at one time all the men available for posting. In some areas it will be possible to post a number of men early in July, but it is anticipated that the majority of men will not commence training before the beginning of August. "It is fully appreciated," stated Mr. Scruple, "that the calling of all youths of 18 for territorial training at one time is likely to present considerable difficulty. Those employers who have a large number of youths of this age in their employ and any employer who desires to arrange for the postponement of tlie training of some of his employees until others return from camp should lodge appeals with tha secretary of the manpower committee in his district."
