ELLERSLIE WORK

ARRIVAL OF MONTE CRISTO
CALULA BOY SPRINTS NICELY
BY ARCHER
Now that the racing season in Auckland has been concluded and many horses are on the easy list there has been a slackening in activity at Kllerslie. However, many trainers are busy educating young horses and there are more rising two-year-olds in work than for some time past. The No. prnss, where the poles were out 10ft., was available for galloping yesterday, but it was scarcely used.
On the grass. Cnlula Boy (Gilchrist) sprinted three furlongs in ,1!) All going well, he is to visit Trentham for the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting next month. Having his first work better than half-pace since his spell, Kindergarten strode over three furlongs in Lis. He js thriving splendidly and should not take long to get ready after he reaches Sydney next month. The only juniper schooled yesterday was Northlander (Cleaver), who jumped the ponv hurdles. He gave a very satisfactory display, although he did net go with quite as much dash as in his previous bouts and hit one fence hard. Xorthlander has plenty of size to make a jumper, but he may take a good time to become seasoned. The disappointing Baldric is being kept going with a view to racing at Trentham -liext month. A delicate, light-fleshed gelding. Baldric is not easy to train, but M. O'Connor understands him and he might pay his ■way ("i his southern trip, although he is by no'means reliable. Only for his dislike of (he fence near the mile post at F.llerslie Baldric might have a better record than lie
possesses. The speedy Transmitter is among the regular workers, and. although he is not doing a great deal at present, he is wintering splendidly. He is thickening and growing into a fine colt and everything augurs well for his prospects as a three-year-old in the new season. Transmitter has a brilliant turn of speed and should prove very smart over short courses. . . Two rising two-year-olds who are doing well are Transcend and Transcript, who are being trained by PL Eva for Miss E. L. Morrison. Transcend is a brown colt by Gvneriutn from Lady Bentinck and he has made a good impression with his smooth action when working. Transcript is a brown filly by FOxbridge from Night Myth and she is also a nice mover. Among the horses nil the track yesterday was Monte Cristo, who has arrived from Te Awamutu and Is now under the care of R. S Bacby. Monte Cristo is carrying a bright and healthy . ppearanee and he is to go to Sydney next month in company with Kindergarten and Ptivach The trio will make a nice team and Bagby has reason to look forward to his trip with confidence. The jumper Pertinax is among the regular workers' and it is probable that lie will make his next appearance at the Pakuranga Hunt Meeting at Elierslie. Pertinax appears to have taken no harm from his fall on the third dav of the Auckland Racing (Tub's winter meeting and the chances are he wil] be improved when he races again. He was of no account on the flat, but looks like being g good jumper.
TURF JOTTINGS
TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP Foxiana, who increased his successes for the season to six by winning the Rangitira Hurdles at Awaputii on Saturday, is a five-year-old gelding by Hunting Song from Martuna, by Martian from Tortulla. winner of the 1901 New Zealand Cup. Foxiana is a fullbrother to Old Surrey and Hunting Lore.' In winning the Mnnawatn Steeplechase and Awapuni Steeplechase, Birkology raised his winning total over country this season to six. having previously won at Napier Park and Gishorne. Birkology is by Psychology from Birkrole, by Birkful from Barcarole, by Martian from Grand Opera, by Gipsy Grand from lima, by Stepniak, so that he has stout breeding.
Yalcron justified his-staunch favouritism for the Mayfield Hack Handicap at Ashburton by an impressive win. lit' only had Ligrhts Out and Good Health behind him half a mile fro.l home, and strangely enough thc-e thr e filled the places. Yalcron and Lights Out had the finish to themselves. Valcron always holding his rival safe
Since Snntoft won the Wellington Steeplechase in 1037 he has raced only four times. Nearly a year 1 ;jter tie won the Pareora Steeplechase and finished second in the Wellington Steeplechase. In the following season he run unplaced in the Grand National Steeplechase, and second in t hf* Lincoln Steeplechase. Santoft has been nominated for the Wellington Steeplechase at Trentham next month. i
Mr. G. TR Macdonald has placed two rising two-year-olds with the Riccarton trainer C. Dawson. One is Cross-Question, a chestnut pisfcr to Pleading by Solicitor-General from Eulalie, and the other is Wedding Ring, a gelding by Guarantee from an Antagonist mare. Mr. Macdonald now has hordes in three stables. Pleading and Shikari are at C'hokebore. and Bird of Prey is in C. C. McCarthys team.
After running a third and two seconds in three previous starts. Young Paddon thoroughly deserved his success in the W oodstock Stakes at Te Awarnutu. It looked as if he might be hemmed in on the rails when the field bunched at the turn, but an opening came at the end. arid he turned it to good account. Young Paddon has never been better and. as he i? in his element when the tracks are soft, he may win again soon.
The success of Kinkle in the W. Cr. Park Steeplechase at Te Awamutu on Saturday was his first since he won the Hunters Steeplechase at Ellerslie in October. In the meantime, he has not appeared often and, in view of the fart' that hp is trained in private in the country, it was not surprising that he was at long odds. Kinkle nns assisted to victory by the poor displays of his opponents, many of v.hom did not jump at all well.
