OFREE KINDERGARTEN
OPENING AT BIRKENHEAD 'Die official opening of the Birkenhead Free Kindergarten was performed yesterday morning by the .Mayoress of Auckland, .Mis. J. A. C. Alliun. Mrs. Allll n i said there was no more important work than that of training the young, and it was a work which brought its own reward. She congratulated Mrs. \Y. li. Darlow and the committee on having, in such a short time, done the work and collected the funds necessary to establish the kindergarten. Auckland was fortunate in its kindergarten organisation, .Mrs. Allum added. The proper training of young people, however small they might be, was of the utmost importance because it maae them conscious of their needs, interests and capacities, and thus tended to make them good citizens. By teaching young people to be unselfish and to serve others, the rising generation would he taught to recognise its responsibilities t<> society, and thus improve social conditions. Other speakers were Miss C. Colegrove, principal of the Auckland Kindergarten Association, and Mrs. Stewart. president of the Northcote Free Kindergarten. Mrs. Darlow presented Mrs. Allum with a sheaf of orchids and with a souvenir spoon as a memento of the occasion. A bouquet was also presented to Mrs. K. ,J. Osborne. Mayoress of Birkenhead. A brief musical programme was later presented.
