REDUCED LIGHTS
POSITION OF VEHICLES
AIDS FOR TRAM DRIVERS ADVICE TO PEDESTRIANS As a sequel to the postponement of reductions in vehicle lighting, which were to have come int l operation yesterday, the Dominion lighting controller, .Mr. F. T. M. Kissel, will visit Auckland later this week to confer with representatives of the Emergency Precautions Scheme Organisation in the metropolitan area ami of the various interests concerned. "The whole situation arising out of reduced general lighting and lighting on vehicles is being kept under constant review," ;.aid the Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allurii, yesterday. "I hope that the discussions which we are to have with Mr. Kissel will clarify a number of matters."
The Mayor added that he bad received information from Wellington that instructions would shortly be issued in regard to the lighting of tramcars. Those, it was stated, would provide for some reduction of interior lighting, which, however, would be adequate for the comfort of passengers. They would also include the provision of aids for the driver, both to enable him io operate the vehicle with safety and to assist him in recognising stopping places and points. "In the meantime," added Mr. Allum, "I would appeal to the public to get ready for the new traffic conditions. Pedestrians will protect themselves and rnako things easier for drivers if they will wear light-coloured clothing at night or something white, such as a band or handkerchief round the right sleeve. The use of a torch when crossing the street is another safeguard."
