TRAFFIC SIGNAL SYSTEM
PROPOSAL FOR AUCKLAND CONSIDERATION DEFERRED A proposal for the acceptance of a tender of £l4 905, that of Messrs. P. R. Baillie and Company, for the supply of traffic signals for 10 Auckland city intersections, was deferred by the City Council last night. The matter will be discussed by the council at a later meeting. The city engineer, .Mr. J. Tyler, reported that, with certain necessary additions. tile tender of Messrs. P. R. liai 1 lie and Company would amount, to £16.022 for 10 intersections. The total estimated cost of supply and installation would vary 'mm about £20.97-) to £21.500. The tender prices were subject to variation owing to the war, and the supply of equipment was subject to permits from the British and New Zealand Governments. The tenders did not comply with the specification requirements. Mr. Tyler added. He suggested that thought should be given to the desirability of proceeding when the element of uncertaintv was so strong and costs high. Mr. A. St. C. Brown suggested that the matter should be postponed. He referred to the high present costs, and the prospects oi losses at sea. and moved that the proposal should lie referred to *|;e incoming council. Mr. W. R. Fee sail] it was unlikely that, owing to the international situation. the equipment could arrive and be installed for some tune, but he would not like to see the opportunity lost. On the suggestion ol the Mayor, Sir Ernest, Davis consideration was deferred.
