HISTORIC GUM TREE
The removal of sand at Orua Bay, Awhitu, has led to fears for the survival of an aged red gum tree, the blooms of which have delighted residents of tiie bay and visitors for many yea rs. A deputation which interviewed the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. V.. Parry, yesterday sought the cooperation of the Government with the Prank lin County Council in efforts to save the tree. It was pointed out that the seed of the red gum tree was brought from Australia in 1836 by the Rev. .Tames Hamlin, when he established the mission station at Orua Bay. "It is a most historic tree," commented Mr. Parry, "and, besides, a beautiful specimen. T feel that its age and history will interest all tree lovers. I will convey the representations to the Franklin County Council, which body, 1 am sure, will he hlepful.
