As they cleared the clubhouses, South Canterbury had caught Wellington, which was endeavouring to pinch out to windward of Auckland. At the first mark off Kauri Point. Otago had the lead from Auckland w'lth | South Canterbury in third position a few seconds ahead of Wellington, with Canterbury close astern Or the run out to the leeward mark, Auckland passed Otago in a smother of foam jus as the southern boat's spinnaker cleat carried awav, but her skipper made a good save. -Canterbury planed across the top of the water to pass Auckland, and there was little between them at the windward mark, Canterbury having lost her spinnaker sheet, winch enabled Auckland to catch her, As they turned for the brat up again, Auckland, Otago and Canterbury were together, with the latter in the best position. South Canterbury carried away her bobstay, which caused her to retire. Auckland got a lift off the clubhouses and drew aw.v from Otago and Canterbury. Siidden puffs of wind off Curran St reel caught the visitors napping, and Auckland went to windward. Wind and tide were setting to leeward, and Wellington and Canterbury threw round off The Watchman, but Auckland and Otago carried on to make a short board right on the marK with about ten seconds between them. Auckland passed Otago about half-way down the leg and Canterbury was next, Wellington being allowed to run off. When they rounded Otago had caught Auckland'and stood on further to gam a good position. As they turned the top mark there was onlv about three seconds between them Auckland was smartest with her spinnaker, and Rogers balanced his crew through the boat for her to plane to advantage, Otago bt On beat to the finishing line, Otago endeavoured to pinch up to lay the mark and was driving hard, but Caress was sailing better and Otago had to put in a shor* board.
