WAR PRISONERS

IMPORTATION PROPOSAL RETURNED MEN'S PROTEST Opposition to the suggestion that prisoners of war should be brought to New Zealand to work on farms was expressed in a statement made yesterday by the president of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association, Mr. J. W. Kendall. "My committee recently discussed this matter and were unanimous in unreservedly condemning such a scheme," stated Mr. Kendall. "Too many members of inimical nations have been freely allowed to enter and settle in this country ever since the last war and in many cases they are settled in professions or occupations in detrimental competition with New Zealand or British-born citizens. "This country badly needs suitable emigrants of British stock, but we do not want- any more enemy aliens; in fact, my committee considers that all aliens of enemy birth or origin should be interned at once and made to work at development of waste land and other necessary work of a progressive nature. "By these means a. double benefit would accrue to the State; firstly, production would be increased and, secondly, one important probable source of leakage of information would be stopped forthwith."
