EXCITING CONTESTS LADIES' SINGLES SURPRISE DEFEAT OF MISS M. BEVERLEY Thrilling tennis was witnessed at the Stanley Street courts yesterday in the semi-finals of both the men's and ladies' singles events. .Miss 15. Potter's victory over Miss M. Beverley, who has held the title for the past four years, was as well-deserved as it was unexpected. She attacked Miss Beverley's backhand with strong, good-length drives, clinching the points when the opportunity offered by fine volleying or angled crosscourt drives. J. Road) defeated W. T. Pountney in straight sets without being unduly pressed at any stage. X. F. Bedford staged a splendid recovery against J. T. May son in the third set after losing the first two in quick time, and again in the fourth set when Mayson ran into a S-love lead. The ladies' doubles final proved an easy victory for the Misses Beverley, who took full advantage of lack of confidence on Mrs. Potter's part. Results are as follows: MEN'S A SINGLES Semi-finals.—J.
