WOMEN ADMIRALS
OLD ENGLISH TRADITION TITLES FROM CIVIC RANK The new Mayor of Chester, Mrs. Kate Clarke, dislikes the sea, but by virtue of her civic rank, she is Admiral of the Deo. Since 1342 every Mayor of Chester has held the rank of admiral, with power over the tidal waters of the Dos from Eccleston to the estuary, more than twenty miles away. The mayoral regalia includes a silver oar, fourteen inches long, and this is the emblem of civic power. It is carried by all the admiral-mayors in the same way as a sceptre. Two other women have been admirals —Mrs. L. M. Foster Welch, who was Mayor of Southampton in 102S, and Mrs. Phyllis Brown, who was Mayor of Chester "in 1939. Now. for the first time in its long history, Haverfordwest is having a woman mayor, who will also be Admiral of the Port She is Mrs. Mav Thomas.
