THE NEW COMET
Sir. —As a member of the Auckland Ast ronom tea 1 Society. I woiild like to congratulate our worthy president on hi< discovery. It is not generally known what a vast amount, of research workMr. Mcintosh has accomplished in the past. He has been untiring in his efforts, and all ale overjoyed to see the fruits of his labour materialise in his being the hrst: in the Dominion or elsewhere to locate the latest celestial visitant. 1 would also like to point out that Auckland is the most. important, city in New Zealand. \nd il is time we had a new observatory and telescope. Visitors from other countries, when shown round the observatory, make rather unpleasant comparisons with the public observatories in the other cities in the Dominion. Although wartime is a period in which practical things conn 1 uppermost, yet there is no reason why our observatory should not he brought up-to-date and made worthy of the prestige and dignity ol t ho most progressive city in Ihe Dominion.
