LOCAL AUTHORITIES' POWERS
.Regulations defining the responsibilities and duties of local authorities under the Termites Act, 1940, have been gazetted. They provide that on a local authority being declared to be within the provisions of the Act it shall commence an inspection of all premises and places likely to harbour termites. Evidence of infestation is not to be disturbed and samples of insects found are to be forwarded by the local authority to the Department of Scientific and Industrial .Research. To examine the understructure of any building, the local authority is authorised to carry out such work as may be necessary to obtain access, including the removal of weatherboard and the cutting of trapdoors in flooring, provided that the work shall be done in a manner least calculated to impair the use of the building. The regulations also set out the conditions to be observed in the erection of new buildings within the district of the local 'authority. Every person guilty of a breach of this regulation shall be liable to a fine of £2O. and the authorities may pull down, remove or alter any building erected in breach of those provisions. The costs incurred shall be recoverable from the person committing the breach.
