CAMBRIDGE FORM

STAItGWI STAYING ON fine pedigree of cynic ropata hawera cup prospect BY ABAVDOS In spite of adverse weather conditions, which seriously affected the betting on the last four races, the Cambridgo Trotting Club staged a successtul meeting on Saturday. The sunt of £J7,122 was put through the totalisator, which was very good under the circumstances, indicating that under favourable conditions, the return would have exceeded that of last. year. The racing was interesting and spectacular, several keen and cxeit ino finishes being witnessed. Sturgiim, second in the Summer Handicap and lii'St iu the President's Handicap, and j Cynic, winner of the Haulapu Handicap and second in the Brunlwood Handicap, revealed fine form. Stargum lias made a good deal of improvement iu the last l'J months and until recently his training was supervised by W. Head, who a few years ago was a leading .North Island trainer. Stargum possesses the speed of his dam, Nellie Brantley, an erratic mare by Great Audubon front Ina Dillon, by Harold Dillon. His sire, Gumdigger, by Cold Bell from Sundial, ami full-brother to Gold Deal and Bell Deal, was a good performer at two miles. It is possible that Stargum lias not yet reached the zenith of his powers. Cynic is a recent addition to C. Morun's stable and in three races she has recorded two wins and a second for him. She displayed promise in the South for ,1. Mcßride, who won good races with Rey Spec and Broughshane. Cynic canies from two fine families, her sire, Giro, winner of the IHi 1 New /calami Derby Slakes, being by Wrack I rum Pearlcliild. Ilatwick. dam of Cynic, was got by Logan Pointer from Precision, whose dam, Kildase, was by Kilcheran, a son of Sealon Delaval and Idassa. Ironside, it high-class pacer, is by Wrack from Gat wick. Cynic should reach a high standard. Lynn Rey Regains Form Ropata registered his first success since Joining the stable of J. J. and E. N. Kennerley when he won the Summer Handicap and he proved his value as a stayer in the effort. Bred by T. Leadbelter at Petone, Ropata has been a useful horse, although not extensively raced, ami lie gives the impression of being capable of further success. His sire, David McHlwyn, an imported son of Mr. McKlwyn, 1 won the Hawera Cup, a racn that should suit Ropata. Ze lie. dam of Ropata, was a tine mare by Hnia Dillon from Fair Puritan. As a four-year-old she ran four firsts and four places in eight consecutive starts. Lynn Rey showed a pleasing return to the winning lis! when he narrowly defeated Wlianago, who improved vastly on his Kpsom and Clamlelands displays, in Ihe Fencoiirt Handicap. Lyon Rey only joined F. J. Smith's team a little while before the Waikato meeting on November ;io and racing has improved him. He is by Key de Gro from F.velyn Locuiida, by .Brent Loeanda from Kvelyn, a full-sister to Kmmcline, Aileen and Kmilius. Evelyn Loeanda won a number of good races for Mr. !i. ft. Cucksey, who bred and owns Lynn Key. Ihi Ihi. who paced in his best style to win the Bruntivood Handicap, is also by Rey de Gro. When first raced Jhi Ihi revealed promise at the trotting gait, but after earning a little place-money his trainer. J. Edwards, who was very successful with Mutu and Kolmar some years ago, put the hopples on the gelding, who last season left the novice ranks by a win .-it Thames. Ihi Ihi has several limes threatened to win again, lull developed a bad habit of breaking under pressure. His dam, Princess Audubon, was got by Great Audubon from Sylvia K. Modern Lady Trots Well Modern Lady, who has made a line return to form this season after being off the scene for some considerable time, won the Bardowie Handicap practically from end to end. She was bred by Mrs. J. I*l. Sweetapple, being by Worthy Bond from Florrie Bingen, by Nelson Bingen from a Harold Dillon mare. Modern Lady did her early racing as a pacer, revealing a lot of promise, but when she went into B. J. Mackies stable the Worthy Bond mare was converted, with a good measure of success. The useful Isabella Pointer is a half-sister, by Jewel Pointer, to .Modern Lady. Silver Countess, winner of the Farmers' Handicap, has made good progress since she made her debut, successfully at the Hamilton matinee meeting a little less than a year ago. Like tier stable, mate Worthy Worker, Silver C'onntess has been taught how to leave the mark .smartly, while she has developed solidliess willt racing. Silver Countess is by Worthy Bingen from an Advance mare, who, it is believed, is the same mare that produced Tan John to Worthy Bingen. Maratua, whose form occasionally last, season suggested he would not take long to leave the novice ranks, revealed marked improvement in winning the first division of the Introductory Handicap. Maratua defeated his rivals in the easiest possible manner, in spite of which the time was good. Maratua is by Peter Btngen, full-brother to Worthy Bingen, from Beatty, a useful performer by Hal Zolock from a Rothschild mare. Scotty Direct, whose previous form was consistent, won the second division, and, penalised lit yards, was second to Cynic in the Haulapu Handicap. Scotty Direct was formerly in Moran's stable and is closely related to Roekella, a good winner for him. Truman Direct, sire of Scotty Direct, was represented last season in the province by Three Bells and Ketc Kura as winners. Snrella. dam of Scotty Direct, is by St. Swilhin from Necessity, a successful producer.
