TWO TITLES TO P. MATHIESON
Good performances wore put up by coin pet i tors fit tin* Auckland swimming championship carnival in the Tepid Baths last night. There was a. large altendance of spectators. The mooting will be con elitded to-night, when the principal event will he the 100 yards men's free-stvle championship. The new 'Ji'O yards men's free-style champion is P. E. Mathieson. of Waiteniata. Against three opponents in the final he opened up a lead of about two yards ut the 100-yard mark from B. Clench (North Shore), who was closely foll.iwed by T. Burleigh iWait etuala). Cleneh was holding doggedly to Mat hieson, who at '_'()() yard: led by only one and a-lialf yards. The others had meanwhile dropped fairly well back. Over the final sprint of yards, Mathieson, las!irim." better, won by three yards. Burleigh was third, eight yards further back, while Mathieson's time was '..'in :li I-ss. A second title was won by him, this being the 100 yards backstroke championship, of which ho lms been the holder for three years. The too yards ladies' free-style championship was won for the fifth consecutive year by Miss K. (Irey (Otaliuhu). She early established a comfort able lead from Misses X. Griffin (Waiteniata) and J. Garland (Newmarket), and, although Miss Griffin challenged strongly over the last l.*» yards. Miss Grey was successful by two yards The time was <>S I ."is. Miss Grey's New Zealand record, put up two years ago, is (i:( :>-ss. The University representative M. Shnnahan became the new J'JO yards breaststroke champion, winninu' by ;is yards from S. Bracctrirdle (Parnell). The title-holder, I''. S. Taylor, withdrew from the race. The i yards Indies' breastst roke champion was Miss J. llarp (Waiteniata). Miss R. Stackpole (Newmarket) was ay,tin the ladies' 200 metres backstroke champion, registering the fast time of .Hm I '_>-ss. Two intermediates losl the titles they won last season. In the 100 yards boys' contest C. Ewen (Ponsonby) was beaten by J. G, NeUelton (North Shore) in the good time
of 01 4-ss. The holder of the hoys' 100 yards backstroke championship. M, Bell (Newmarkei), had this wrested from him by R. B. Darlow (North Shore), whose time was 1m 10 :?-ss.
By far the most thrilling contest of the carnival was staged by Net tell on and Ewen in the Ito yards intermediate boys' free-style event. They were on equal terms for the whole distance, swimming stroke for stroke, but:, pushing off better from the last turn, Nettlelon secured the title by a touch in ,*>ni .Mis. Another to retain a championship was R. Rice, of Whangarei, the winner id' the 100 yards junior boys' race. He registered (i!i -l-ss. Victor in the 50 yards junior girls' event was Miss .1). Bridson (North Shore), the winner of the tiny-tots' championship, was unlucky to lose, stopping at first, about two yards short of the rope Following are the results:—

Attention was drawn to the fact that the programme for the championships showed that they were bointr held in two baths, New Plymouth and ,Stratford. It was pointed out that permission had been refused on past occasions Tvhen applications had been made for holding championships in different bollis. The matter was referred to the New Zealand Council.
