USE IN WAR EFFORT

METAL FROM THE EMDEN DESTROYED GERMAN CRUISER Weighing about 201b., a piece of metal from the bridge of the .German cruiser Emden, which was destroyed by the Australian cruiser Sydney in 1914, has been handed to "the Auckland Patriotic Council under the waste metal reclamation scheme. The donor is Mr. 11. J. Collins, of Remuera lload. As an employee of the Pacific cable service, Mr. Collins served for a long period on Cocos Island, and during a yachting trip he landed on the spot where the Emden was beached. He obtained the metal, which is evidently an alloy of brass and bronze and a part of the bridge equipment, and was given official permission to do so. It had been his intention to have the metal beaten into a tray or gong, but he now considers its use in the war effort is peculiarly fitting.
