KILLED IN ACTION

FIRST WOMAN WARDEN I [from our own correspondent] LONDON, Oct. 22 The first woman warden to be killed in action in this war is Mrs. C. Roder, a widow, of Hampstead, London. One of the first women to enrol for A.It.P. work, she was on telephone duty when a bomb bit the suburban post from which she works. With about seven men wardens, she was buried for some time under a heavy pile of debris. Although trapped themselves, the men tried to free her from a heavy beam, which they were in a position to reach, but Mrs. Roder would not have them endanger their lives. "1 am all right," she said. "W T ait until you are free yourselves before you help me." When at last they were able to clear her, she was unconscious and later died.
